The so-called ‘closure report’ that was submitted by Telangana Police omitted some of the names that of several high-profile individuals, including the now Secunderabad MP Bandaru Dattatreya, Minister for Women and Child Development Smriti Irani and others, who were named in Ramana’s case in the initial stages. Such conclusion in the report is made by drawing a link between personal stressors and Rohith’s suicide, despite of mentioning the other factors like harassment of him and the external pressures he received.

The police report revealed that Rohith’s inability to cope with class workload and his political engagements very less positively influenced mental well-being, which eventually led to low self-esteem and psychological pain. It pointed to his termination of a PhD program after two years’ study and his enrollment in another school, which, as we later know, also never lead to a degree thanks to his activism. The report in addition concluded that Rohith had problems even with his fake Schedule Caste (SC) certificate, organized by his mother since he was afraid of negative reactions if his friends got to learn of the truth.

Notwithstanding, the findings in the closure report were received with suspicion and outcry by Rohith’s family, protesters and cushtomer activists who have been demanding justice in the case. Rohith’s mother and brother cast uncertainty over the findings of the police questioning the ineffective investigation procedures and the unnecessary non-transparency in the operation. The conditions of this young Dalit scholar promote the Telangana director general of police (DGP) Ravi Gupta to the need of further investigations in the death case of Rohith where she openly said it is necessary to examine the context of death.

As the critics of closure report counter argue, the report leaves out the larger picture of caste inequities faced by Dalits. It emphasizes on the neglect, bullying and the marginalization of Dalit students and activists all over the country. They underscore the fact that the responsibility lies with a fair call and justice for Rohith Vemula whose culmination in death has come to be a representation of the ongoing effort of eradicating caste-based discrimination and social inequity.

The expiry of the closure report, just ten days before voting in Telangana on May 13 for the Lok Sabha elections has sparked off anger of not women alone but even men that it might amount to political motives behind the closure of the case. However, others argue that the report’s release may be a part of politicians’ attempts to influence public opinion or sidetrack from serious topics that demand immediate action during the election period.

And as we are getting to the bottom of the matter regarding Vemula’s death, this case has been used as a symbol of the challenges faced by underprivileged groups in India and of the need for education system reforms to ensure that all students get fair, equal, and just treatment in the education system.
